Text Message Accident Scam

A few minutes ago I got a text on my mobile from +447849031791 which said.

You may be entitled to 6000 pounds compensation for the Accident you had. To claim for free reply with YES to this msg. To opt out text stop. HBXA

As I haven’t had an accident, it’s either a cyber ambulance chaser or a scam.  Take your pick!

I will not reply.

I did search the Internet with Google and found a useful site called WhoCallsMe.  They had several copies of the same message registered on their site.

Note – I put quotes around “You may be entitled to 6000 pounds compensation for the Accident you had” to do the search.

This isn’t the first time I’ve come across these sort of people.  A few months ago to get one off the phone, I had to use the F-word many times and put the phone down on him at least six times.

  1. I also got an identical text, again without the accident. I will agree that not replying is the best move – it’s the same deal if you get a spam email in that replying just tells them you’re a live number.

If you have an accident you need actual professional medicolegal advice, not a text message advert.

  2. The only accident I’ve had lately was to get a shell splinter into my foot on Holkham Beach. Who would be sued for that one? Neptune?

It was much worse than when I got mugged in Naples, as I didn’t have the satisfaction of hurting my assailant, as they were already dead.

  7. Don’t worry they just generated it.

It must be lucrative if they can afford to send that many texts.

  13. Basically, these con artists just try numbers in turn.

So they might start at 077xx 123456 and then try 077xx 123457 etc.

As they know you opened the text, they may try again.

So delete them all and never ever reply to any of them. That way they’ll know they’ve found a real number, which they might sell on as genuine to other scam artists.

  16. The number they are using looks like it might be one of those £1 a minute jobs. So that’s another reason to beware.

  18. Similar text from +447548052392
Text was “Our records indicate you may be entitled to £3750 for the accident you had. To claim free reply with PI to this message. To opt out text STOP”

Also getting regularly phone calls from companies referring to the accident. When I ask how they found out about it, one said they got it from a survey. A lie ! When I start quizzing them more and ask for their address they put the phone down. I think we must have a data leak through an insurance broker or supplier or comparison quote web site as these started soon after i did some quotes online

  19. That would explain a lot! Sounds like a case for Watchdog or moneysavingexpert.com. But don’t waste too much time on them, just never sign up. Are they phoning on your landline? I’ve stopped nuisance calls with trueCall.

  20. I am a PAYG mobile owner. I just found one of these texts in my inbox referring to a bogus accident. I deleted it as I guessed it would cost megabucks to reply. Power to the honest people!

  25. just got one:
    +447526307895
looks like you can’t complain to anybody until you’ve replied telling them to stop and only then if they continue sending texts.
Pretty useless, basically it means firms can bombard everybody once and get away with it.

  26. I get these too, but instead of being p****d off by them, I have lots of fun wasting thier time and money by, for example, telling them about my ‘accidents’ on trains seats, or slating them becuase they are a care agency that didn’t turn up etc.

Aside from giving my office colleagues lots of fun, and getting personal satisfaction, I do it in the hope that if everyone did it, they’d eventually give up and turn to more productive, and ethical, methods of advertising.
