The Sun Adds To The Words Over The Falklands

The Sun has taken out an advert in an Argentinian paper to put their version of the British view on the Falklands direct to the country.

It’s an interesting tactic, but I don’t think it will soften the Argentinian view that the Falkland Islands are theirs.

I think we are right to say that the Falkland Islanders have the right of self-determination.

On that basis, does that mean that say the Isle of Wight has the right to do what it wants?  It might ban people from wearing yellow socks for instance.

That may seem a silly example, but various religions and political factions in this country, would like to create enclaves, where they do what they want.

Can we have it both ways?

  1. I don’t think your example of the Isle of Wight is relevant, as there is no plan to change their sovereignty. If there was then their views should be paramount. We have moved on from the time when governments simply hand over lands to another country. No state should be able to claim ownership of an area of land they don’t already have jurisdiction over. If the Argentinians want the Falklands then there is nothing stopping them. All they have to do is to befriend the islanders, create trust and a willingness to cooperate, and nothing will stand in their way of getting control. Their invasion put that back 50 years, and it will probably take another 50 years if they start now.

    • I think quite a lot will stand in their way and that they will never get control of the Falklands, or at least I hope this will be the case. I base my opinions on the extensive oil and gas supplies around the islands which, if the islanders manage and invest in wisely and ecologically, will be able to provide them with independence and security for the future.

Argentinians seem to have a primitive hunter-gatherer mentality and a shocking disregard for other people’s rights – witness their treatment of indigenous tribes in Argentina. They should never be allowed to take control of the Falklanders’ home.

  2. I think the only way they’ll get control, would be if a powerful Third Party country insisted we did. But then they have consistently mismanaged their own economy for many years.
