A Fat Tax

Dr. Mike Rayner of Oxford University is proposing a fat tax. BBC Breakfast had that obese size awareness campaigner to put the other side.

Surely, they could find someone more attractive for this time in the morning, or are they all like that in the North.

I have been for a fat tax for years, and we should follow Denmark and France.

On the other hand, we could have a tax-back scheme, where if you have a yearly check-up by your doctor and he thinks you’re saving the NHS money, you get an extra tax allowance.

I notice by the way, that the obese lady was called Fatima.  How appropriate! Could that be the cause of herr problems, as she was teased badly by her classmates at schoo.

  1. Poor people won’t be happy with that tax.

    • In a lot of cases that is a misconception. Over my life, I’ve met many so-called poor people, who eat as well as anybody. In some ways they only follow the sensible rules that people like my mother’s generation did, who grew up in an era of food rationing. I didn’t see a banana until I was six.

      • Grown up in failing USSR I tasted a banana even later, so I understand you and I agree with your idea. The main thing is indeed just to stay conscious about what you buy, cook and eat, and there are ways to east more or less healthy even on very tight budget.

But the strange thing is that it’s probably a harder way to follow nowadays than before, because now you see plenty of people around who aren’t struggling and consume happily, so you want to keep up in at least what you can afford, hence the sweets, fried food etc.

Luckily, food prices don’t bother me personally, I’m not obese and can say I eat healthy, but I can’t blame people whose only affordable pleasure is some cheap sugar drink, really.
