How To Really Annoy Cold Callers

Richard Herman really got back at cold callers trying to sell PPI insurance and suchlike, by charging them £200 and getting paid. It’s all here on the BBC.

Perhaps we should annoy cold callers, by saying we’re a friend or relative of Richard Herman and we’re going to use his methods.

I suspect as the news has broken round the country from the BBC, there has been a lot of people saying, I’ll get the next idiot who phones.

  1. We have been with TPS for years, and get very few cold callers. The ones which really irritate me are my bank and energy suppliers ringing to sell me new services!

    • The only cold callers I get are fraudulent ones, as they don’t show up on 1471. My bank has only ever called me once and that was in response to an e-mail query. My energy company never has.

      If they do cold call me, I’ll warn them that if they do it again, we’ll be saying goodbye.

      I’d like to make it a criminal offence to do a cold sales call and not leave a valid number in 1471. That would stop it!

  3. Thanks Anonymous. I don’t know all of the situation, but understand that it is illegal in certain circumstances to cold call and it is illegal for them not to reveal who they are during the call. I was cold called 10 days ago, played along (sadly the only way to find out who they are) and I was passed from the cold caller to a claims company to a 250 person firm of solicitors – they may all be the same company, they certainly work as one organisation. When I complained to the firm of solicitors their compliance manager said that it was illegal for them to cold call and that they could get into big trouble for it.

    • I always have the number of the local rogue minicab company handy, as they keep sticking waste paper through my door. I have been known to say to the cold caller, can you call me on my land line and give them the number of someone annoying me. I suspect they do a better line in swearing and abuse than I do. I’ve never ever been phoned again by the same cold caller, if I do that.
