Greece’s Final Bailout?

I don’t expect so!

But they got one yesterday, as the BBC reports.

Will we ever sort Greece out?

In some ways all we’re doing with Greece, is like giving an alcoholic a bottle of Scotch a day.

Until the Greeks change their habits and accept their lifestyle will have to change, we’ll have to keep bailing them out.

In some ways, the key to a country’s future is its education system. According to this report on the BBC, the UK system ranks sixth in the world. We could obviously do better, but on looking at the full table, Greece is ranked 34.

  1. Tough love not enabling. Giving the alcoholic the Scotch is enabling them to be alcoholic, bailing Greece out is enabling them to be profligate. Some years ago we found ourselves acting as surrogate parents to a teenage family member with huge issues. We used tough love, and it was jolly tough I have to day. We refused to give him money, or to buy food (he was living in his grandmothers home, she had gone into a care home) until he had eaten the food already in the house. My dad refused to drive the miles there and back to his house to take him bread or milk because he had forgotten to put a note out for the milkman. We cooperated with social services over the sale of the house to pay for his gran’s care, but did help him find somewhere suitable to live – he went into a project which supports young people who cant live with family of origin, but not ready to live alone either. It was hard, we got sworn at a lot. But now, 7 years on, the nice young man he has become recognises why we did what we did and is grateful. EU needs to do same with Greece.
