This advert for noise-cancelling head-phones are on buses all over London.

Are These A Good Idea?

Personally, I have always hated head phones, even when I flew aircraft, but surely to cut the noise of traffic out, is not necessarily a good idea for pedestrians and cyclists.

We need a serious analysis of accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists.

  1. I have a pair of Bose noise cancelling headphones, they cover my full ear not just the smaller area of the ones on the ad. I suffer from hyperacusis caused by nerve damage to the part of my ear which regulates noise level, and so I hear most sounds very very loudly. ENT and Hearing Therapy told me not to wear ear plugs as it will make the problem worse in the long term.

So NC headphones are huge benefit to my life. Being Bose the sound is pure, which helps. When I am reading or when there is a lot of background noise, I have them on, and listen to gentle music from my iPhone/iPad. I am more relaxed, and in less pain. I never drive in them, and since I am unable to walk far or cycle outside a gym, it isn’t an issue for me. I can put them on, switch them on, and not listen to anything, they still work at noise cancelling, and I do sometimes do that. This afternoon I have a couple of hours reading for the course I am doing, and the headphones will be playing to me – probably Grieg.

The headphones are comfortable – the foam is memory phone so that it adapts to the shape of my ears, which helps.

They are literally probably the best £300.00 we ever spent!
