Fire On Scroby Sands Wind Turbine Self-Extinguishes, Incident Under Investigation

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on offshoreWIND.biz.

This is the sub-heading.

A wind turbine at the Scroby Sands offshore wind farm in the UK caught fire yesterday morning (15 August). The cause of the fire, which self-extinguished later the same day, is now being investigated.

This sort of incident doesn’t seem to be reported very often, although this one was shown prominently in this article on the BBC, which contains a video.

  1. They dont happen very often which is why and because they are out in open air easy to photograph them when they do. How many events do you get inside power stations? Who knows all hidden from the public unless the whole lot goes up. The fact is our lights stay on because we have a well designed system that can support the odd failure.

This installation is nigh on 20 years old and is first gen with gearboxes with lots of fluid sloshing about compared to modern day direct drive turbines plenty of sources for ignition although you wold imagine there is some automatic fire extinguishuing system fitted to the nacelle as that is where all the high cost is in components but also cost if you have to hire a jack up vessel to deal with it. Suspect it will be removed now rather than replaced.
