Are Best Before Dates Reliable?

This picture shows one of Marks and Spencer’s gluten-free All Butter Fruit Scones, that has been all dressed up and is ready to eat.

It no longer exists, as I have just eaten it.

It tasted fine, despite having a best before date of the 7th August, 2024.

  1. I always check out the short dated stock with a discount and have never had a problem, I just put the in the deep freezer.

  2. I think Best Before dates are always much earlier than they need to be because so many people ignore them. Compromised immune system means I literally stick to them but I know that Neil eats things that are past their sell by dates, and doesnt have any problems from them. That said, it may vary from shop to shop. Most of my GF food comes from M&S and quite a bit of other food as well. There may well be some shops who sell food when it is just on its sell by date, but isnt labelled.

My late aunt moved from Barnet up to Stockport. HUGE main road terrace in Barnet, lots of kitchen cupboards etc. And she brought most of it with her when she moved to a much smaller 3 bed semi here. She died fairly soon after moving – about 3 years I think. When we cleared her house the amount of food past its sell by date was beyond belief. There were about a dozen tins of Fussells cream; the volume was in fluid ounces, and there was no mention of a sell by date. We opened one of them and it looked fine – I think somebody tasted a drop and said it was fine. The 2- or 30 year old home made jam, bottled fruit and the other things like that were clearly inedible due to the amount of mould on them.

I am glad you enjoyed your scone,

    Liz

  3. Some foods have use by dates because they go bad and will make you ill – most fresh meat and fish, although some meat actually improves by being “hung” longer. Other foods tend to have use by dates, usually those that will not go off, just tired e.g. bread, cheese, most veg’ etc., although I eat mouldy cheese (e.g. Stilton) I don’t eat mouldy bread, stale bread can be toasted and my mum made it into bread and butter pudding when I was a child.
