Trump’s Tariffs Threaten To Wipe Out UK’s Economic Growth

The title of this post is the same as that of this article on The Times.

This is the sub-heading.

Rachel Reeves could be forced to raise taxes or cut spending after the US president announced plans for tariffs of up to 25 per cent on cars

These three paragraphs add more detail.

Rachel Reeves faces having to raise taxes or cut spending if President Trump follows through on his threat to impose tariffs on Britain next week, the official budget watchdog has warned.

The chancellor was forced to announce a £14 billion package of cuts to repair the public finances in her spring statement after the Office for Budget Responsibility halved growth forecasts.

But the budget watchdog warned that there was a 50 per cent chance that Reeves would be forced to return with further cuts or tax rises as soon as October amid concerns that the UK’s economic outlook will deteriorate still further.

So I  will hit back in the only way I can and avoid buying any goods made by US companies.

I have started by removing any US-owned products from my Ocado order on Saturday.

  1. well one can’t blame Rachel from accounts for this one OTOH, like Brexit, as Trump is already finding out isolationist policies damage one’s own economy far more than the intended “target”.

    • As a Control Engineer, I know the best solutions are ones that tend to an equilibrium somewhere in the middle.

Trump’s solutions generally will crash and burn, as the mathematics are not even unsound, but they don’t even exist.

      Trump is a mathematical nincompoop.

  2. As much as I would like to boycott US products and services it will not be easy.

I received this post on my American Apple iPad via my Virgin Media O2, a telecom company that is a 50:50 joint venture between Liberty Global a US company and Spain’s Telefónica. Of course I could dust down my PC, which runs Windows software, but how to run an Internet search? Better not use Google or Bing. I’ll certainly have drop WhatsApp for overseas communication.

Then there are all those household products that Johnson and Johnson help clean the house and populate the medicine cabinet. I’ll have to say bye bye to Proctor and Gamble’s range of Home and Personal Care products as well as consigning Colgate to bin.

I could take a leaf out of your practice of using Ocado rather than Amazon but then again how would I get all of those non food products?

No more Cadburys Chocolate either, a victim of the insatiable US Kraft Foods/Mondelez empire…….I could go on, but you get the picture. I haven’t even scratched the service
