What’s Wrong With Women Priests?

A woman priest has just said on BBC Breakfast, that as she walked down the Holloway Road, a man came up to her and said she was a disgrace because she was a woman and a priest. It’s not her, that’s the disgrace, but the bigot who said that.

So now we’re going to have women bishops! I can see no reason why.  What is much more worrying about religion is those faiths and so-called believers that want to deny others their human rights.  There were two examples yesterday; the Protestant marches in Northern Ireland and the Despatches program detailing the treatment of homosexuals in Africa. Although the latter wasn’t specifically about religion, religious organisations in Africa do not always embrace those with a different sexual orientation or even gender.

When faced with these sort of unplesant views and incidents, it drives any organised  religion farther from my soul. But that doesn’t stop me following a general moral code, that is to the benefit of all, whether they be man or woman, gay or straight, black or white.

  2. Up in Scotland we can’t understand the fuss – of course we got rid of bishops a long time ago! – and women have been being ordained as ministers for nearly 50 years now. Of course there was a lot of complaining and moaning at the time, but they are not unusual – in fact a woman was appointed Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland a couple of years ago. That’s the top position in the C of S, although it’s chairing the committee rather than making policy. Our new minister in the parish church here is female, mid-30s, married with a small boy.

  4. I am a Christian, and I attend a Methodist church, not C of E. We have had women ministers for many years, women preachers long before that, and senior positions are regularly held by women. In many denominations there are far more female entrants to the ministry than male. So those which dont allow women ministers will have some very difficult times ahead, as would the C of E if they didnt allow women bishops.

As for homosexuality, I do know what the Bible says about it. I also know some very sincere Christians who are gay, including at one point a gay minister. And I believe that their sexuality is between them and God.

And as for religion, there are some denominations which dont help themselves and give Christianity a bad name. I have just finished a Christian course and the bigotry of some of the other course participants was a serious concern to me.

  6. I believe in jesus. I have a woman priest in the church where I went . I was imposed to have it as a priest. The difference with male priest is that you call them FATHER no MOTHER . MOTHER doesn’t exist in the bible,
IT?S A HORRIBlE church when you come to this matter m I was thinkin that it could have been mother to represent the female model of the cron in England and to differ from the Roman church .
