Empty-nester? Buy underwear…

This was the come-on for one of the inside articles in today’s East Anglian Daily Times.  It was subtitled “Lynne Mortimer’s sage advice”

It wasn’t advising mothers, who just packed their last child off to University, to buy something sexy to get the old man or possibly a new one in their lives, to get the production line going again, but a plea for mothers to make sure that their sons had enough pants to take with them. Preferably the same colour as their towels; black.

  3. If they are old enough to go to uni they are old enough to buy their own underwear. My girls had an allowance from early teens which was to buy clothing, including undies. I dont know why, but a lot of boy’s mothers do far more for than than girl’s mothers. When my eldest was at uni one of the boys in her flat was totally useless, he used to post his laundry home to his mother each week and she would send it back washed and ironed. Another used to come up and clean her sons room for him – and we are talking 100 mile each way journeys here!

  5. It was the speaker, Michael Martin. I know what my wife would have said and it’s not repeatable.

  6. Probably much and same as I would have said! The mother who did the washing was at the flat one time when I was there collecting Lynne, and I told her she was stupid. She said she loved her son and didnt want him having to go out in clothes which werent clean and ironed. I said something along the lines of “I rest my case”. I was in the middle of something when a programme called YOung Dumb and Living off Mum came on TV and developed and morbid fascination and watched the whole episode. I was stunned at just how some mothers treat their children! My girls had more independence at 3 than some of these did at 23!
