The North and East London Lines at Mildmay Park

This picture was taken from the top of a 141 bus and shows the North and East London Lines running parallel  to each other.

North and East London Lines at Mildmay Park

The North London Line is on the right or north side and has overhead electrification, as it also takes frieght traffic between the East of London and the West Coast Main Line.  The East London Line to the left has to use third rail to be compatible with the electric lines south of the river and because there is not enough clearance in the Thames Tunnel for the lines to be overhead.

There used to be a Mildmay Park station, at about the point, where the road bridge can be seen in the picture. But it was removed because it was too close to the other station at Canonbury. At some point, there will probably be some reorganisation here, as you have buses coming up Essex and Southgate Roads, that don’t interface with the Overground.

  1. If this pix was taken from a 141 bus, and the three rail is on the left, the Mildmay Park station is behind the photographer, and was closed to passenger traffic in 1934. The station that you refer to in the distance was the first Canonbury and Newington Green road, not another Mildmay Park. As you say, this Canonbury station was too close to the present one and closed in 1870.

  2. I took the picture looking westwards from Mildmay Park which is the extension of Southgate Road. The map in the Wikipedia link above clearly shows that Mildmay Park Station was on the east side of Newington Green Road.

    • The station on Newington Green Road was “Newington Road and Balls Pond” opened in 1858, ranamed Canonbury in 1870, and then closed and replaced by the present Canonbury station which opened slightly to the West in 1870. Mildmay Park station was on Mildmay Park, opened in 1880 and closed in 1934.

      • Greetings again,
I lived just around the corner from the Mildmay Park station and I can assure you it was on Mildmay Park, not Newington Green Roadhttp://www.disused-stations.org.uk/m/mildmay_park/index.shtml or – http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/c/index.shtml. As I said, the first Canonbury station was on Newington Green Road. – and you can see the map on this site that shows Mildmay Park station ON Mildmay Park. Newington Road station closed well before that when the second Canonbury station opened further west. Hope this helps.
        cheers
