David and Samantha Cameron Set a Dangerous Precedent

If I go back three years or so, C and I would often take a weekend away by flying from Stansted and staying in a good, well-reviewed, but not necessarily over expensive  hotel.  In fact in the year she died, we did it three times to Nice, Majorca and Valencia.

So it was good to see David and Samantha Cameron doing exactly the same thing last week to celebrate her fortieth birthday.

But have they set a dangerous precedent?

Wow betide a politician, who takes an expensive break, except in the summer! The tabloids will have a field day.

I particularly like their flying on budget airlines.  So they did fly Ryanair one way and easyJet the other, but I suspect this was probably mre to do with fooling the press and security than anything else.

We perhaps will never see the Queen on a budget airline, but there have been many reports of her travelling to Kings Lynn for Sandringham on the train from King’s Cross. As I’ve regularly used First Class on that line, I may have actually sat in a seat she has used.

  1. There is a picture on one of the papers of them waiting for their plane at Stansted. They don’t seem to be standing in the same sort of queue I am used to. The PM and his wife get VIP treatment even from Ryanair. I certainly feel like a VUP (U = unimportant) when I fly with them (or Easyjet).

  2. I think that picture was taken in the normal pier, not the Ryanair one. At this time of year and with the fact that Ryanair has reduced services, that was probably just luck, that they were alone. I’ve flown to Genoa on Ryanair early in the year and the plane was almost empty. I think someone probably looked for a very cheap flight.

  3. Ryanair and Stansted airport is my scariest experience in an aircraft. Flying back from Blackpool (twas only £5!) we were on approach and halfway down the runway we were still at 200ft…cue immediate rise and flyaround. The pilot came on to say that there was a plane already on the runway so had to abort. Second approach and we hit the runway with the power of a brick falling from 10ft! After that experience, I understood why they are known as RyanScare!

  4. I used to fly light aircraft and actually flew one all round Australia. Things like that may be scary, but airliners are designed to do it and pilots are trained to do it safely. I flew on Indian Airlines in the 1980s and that was really scary. In one case the passengers were getting so agitated, that I barged my way on to the flight deck to find out what was going on. They were jump starting another 737 using bleed air from the plane we were on. It was all explained and then the pilot deputed me to calm the passengers down.

The only thing crazy about Ryanair is O’Leary!
