Dr. Rosemary Says It’s OK To Eat Eggs
Rosemary Leonard has just been recommending that we eat more eggs, saying that they have proteins that are good for your eyes and vitamins D and B12.
An interesting thing she said was that Mexicans eat the most eggs per person. Someone said, this was because Mexico is a poor country, but it would be interesting to know why.
For the Royal Wedding, a friend and his Mexican wife stayed. On knowing that I was a coeliac, she said that Mexicans don’t eat much bread. But they do eat maize-based tortillas.
Does anybody have any information on the numbers of coeliacs in Mexico and how they get on? I suppose that their diet will be ruined by their neighbour to the north.
Dont have any info on the Mexicans…but I do know of the incidence of CD in Western Sahara…one of the poorest nations..where they have by tradition been a nomadic people…eating millet as the staple. Millet is more drought tolerant than wheat..shorter growing time etc etc. Now the population has tended to settle…and grow in numbers…and they have needed food imports from the UN/EC etc…and what has been supplied…wheat.
Numbers of Coeliacs…high at 1 in 6.
I find this all very interesting…

I’ve heard that before about the Western Sahara.
If you read DogtorJ he has some interesting insight into why so many died on slave ships going west.

I dont know about Mexico either, except I used to know a Mexican, she was fairly Westernised, loved over here. I gathered from her that a lot of the food which we would recognise over here as Mexican would be completely unrecognisable to Mexicans.

Goa impressed me in that some restaurants did proper Indian food and said that they only used gram flour. One even invited me into the kitchen to check.

There are aprox 2.6 millions of celíacs in Mexico according to the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán. Not sure what’s the relation to the maiz-based diet and…er, eggs! But all sounds very interest! worth looking into it.
