Evangelical Christians and AIDS
It is claimed in this report, that three people have died because they have been convinced by evangelical christians, that prayer rather than drugs can cure their AIDS.
The religious nutters should be prosecuted, before they confince others.
These stories always alarm me.
I am a Christian, and I have prayed with people who have serious illnesses. I am aware of two people who I knew well, and whose cicrumst circumstances I knew well, whose sudden and medically unexpected recovery cannot be explained by normal means. One was 40 years ago, one was about 15 years ago. In neither case were the people involved told to stop medication – one was in intensive care anyway. In any genuine prayer mainstream Christians will always tell people NOT to stop medication or other treatments, and will generally pray for God’s blessing on them, not for a cure. Healing and cure are NOT the same thing. Many people have found that prayer has brought prayer and acceptance rather than cure. I have with my own disability issues.
These stories about people stopping treatment because someone has told them prayer will cure them bring the rest of Christianity into disrepute. I do know Christians like this, and they know what I think. There are others out there too who claim they can “cure” when medicine cant, particularly in the field of cancer. And since snake oil is nicer than chemo, there are people who chose that option and die as a result. That alarms me too.
So I get really cross with some of these very extreme charismatic evangelical Christians. Because 99.9% of Christians will be as horrified as I am.
