Blackburn Rovers are Relegated
One of the most historic clubs in the Premier League, Blackburn Rovers, was relegated last night.
It would appear that the new owners had no idea about what they had bought and BBC Radio 5 was saying last night, that they’d thought they’d bought a franchise which couldn’t be relegated and an endless cash chicken.
Someone emphasised the latter, by bringing a chicken to the match, complete with its own team shirt. Read the report in that new tabloid, the Guardian.
It is a very sad affair and is another club that has got into trouble because of inappropriate and/or stupid ownership.
I felt particularly upset last night for Dave Whelan. the Wigan owner, as his team sent them down. He had been a Blackburn player in the 1960 Cup Final, when he was carried off due to a broken leg.
Many years ago, I lived in Blackburn where I worked for Mullard (there’s a blast from the past), and my wife to be came over to stay with me during the summer. One evening we were fed up with cooking, and so we decided to go and get some fish and chips (no eating out on our meagre income). We joined a long queue and whilst waiting J noticed a poster on the wall about Blackburn Rovers. She turned to me and said in a loud voice “I didn’t know Blackburn had a football team”. There was shock horror from the mainly male queue. I explained that she wasn’t with me which raised a few smiles, and we were excused her faux pas.

We used to live next door to Blackburn, in Burnley. I have Wright family as well, but not from there

I am not actually from Blackburn, but I moved there from York for work. I stayed for about 15 months and then moved back down to London where I was born and brought up.

I am not from there either, we were there for a year and a half before we moved to Kent for husbands job, then we moved back up North to Manchester area, been here 25 years. My Wright ancestors were from Nottingham but moved to London to start a business -John Wright and Sons Veneer Merchants, on the river near what is now Mile End Park. There used to be a huge crane with the name on it.
