25 Years Since The Great Storm

Today marks twenty-five years since the Great Storm.  I wrote about my personal experiences of the storm here.

One point, is today the BBC is reporting from Sussex.  In Suffolk, we probably got it as bad as anywhere, with a lot of the county without power for two weeks and forests like Rendlesham  were completely devastated.

But of course, at the time, the BBC didn’t have a local radio or television station in Suffolk.  Yet again, another example of Suffolk being left to its own devices.

  1. I remember lying in bed thinking that the awful wind we could hear was sending a tin can – coke or similar – up and down the street. When we got up it turned out to be our neighbours roof tiles being blown off and smashing as they hit the ground. Our power was out for some hours, and our phone line was down as well. Lynne, aged 5 and just started school was adamant that she was going to school, and I remember pointing out her a tree that had blown down, and saying how rare that was, and she may never see that again. The 100 yards away, around the next bend, there were several more! That was when we started to realise that the night’s weather had been more than “a bit windy”.
