The Guy From Iceland Has A Point

In this article on the BBC web site, the boss of the Iceland chain, blames councils for forcing down meat quality and prices.

Local councils are to blame for driving down food quality with cheap food contracts for schools and hospitals, the boss of Iceland has said.

Speaking on the BBC’s Andrew Marr show, Malcolm Walker said the “problem really lies” with councils buying food from the poorly supplied catering industry.

He may not be totally right, but I do think he has a point.

I must admit, that I have met several individuals, who through their farm or company have supplied the big supermarkets for a number of years and from their comments, dealing with the supermarkets isn’t always as difficult, as the press would have us believe. But then saying the supermarkets are honest and good, doesn’t sell newspapers.

  1. School meal contracts are very difficult, not that long ago school meal services were expected to provide a 2 course meal for £1.00 per child, and that included staffing and production costs as well as food. Needless to say, the quality was awful.

    • Twas ever thus. I can remember my awful school dinners in the 1950s and 1960s. In the end, I took sandwiches, which weren’t that good for the coeliac I am. Although, I wasn’t diagnosed then!

  2. Pre coeliac diagnosis, one of my roles as a school governor was to go into school and eat lunch in the dining room with the children, being served exactly what the children had. At once stage, the lunches werent bad at all. Not what I would choose on a regular basis, but adequate and reasonably nutritious. But they got worse and worse over time

  3. It maybe Ok for the Yanks to go to the Moon with the Lowest Price for Multi Contracts . . . what about ALL of US UPDATING the CONTRACT RULES to support UK Locals.

The NEW RULES Should be Schools MUST BUY FOOD locally, and be proud of UK Quality . . .
[Smaller Portions, properly eaten] . . . DO NOT BUY the Lowest Common Denominator, and then we don’t run the risk of feeding people Horse Meat, while paying for Prime Beef.
