Why Do I Have To Buy 2.5 Kg Of Potatoes?

I made two chicken, bacon and potato pies last night, but in Waitrose I had to buy 2.5 Kg of potatoes, as they didn’t have any smaller packs or loose ones that were suitable for mashing.

As I had to carry them back on a bus, I wasn’t pleased.

My two pies need a kilogram and as i don’t use many the remainder will probably have gone off before I need them.

Is this why we waste so much food?

I just buy what I need to make my meal or in the case of pies, my meal and one a couple of days later.

We need an efficient cooking philosophy that minimises waste, cooking time and washing up.

Some will say this is why ready meals are popular, as all you have to do is stick them in the microwave and wash the plate up at the end. But I have just thrown an unused Marks and Spencer ready meal into the bin, as I bought it in case, I didn’t get any food on my three late nights last week, and it is now well past its sell-by date.

  1. Independent greengrocers are usually happy to sell smaller quantities. With the rest of the potato how about making some gluten free potato cakes for snack meals, they freeze well and reheat in the toaster, under the grill or in the microwave. Or what I call “farmhouse potato” – put mashed potato in a freezer proof container, fork the top, put a tiny bit of marg or similar on top, freeze it, and then take out and heat in oven on day you fancy mash. When the girls were small and I was busy, if we were having visitors for tea I would put a casserole of some sort in slow cooker and boil and mash some potatoes and put them in oven proof container to go in oven 40 minutes before we were due to eat the casserole – I could do that while the girls were having breakfast and i didnt have to worry about any of it.

  2. Sorry but that’s not me! As it is I have to go to both Waitrose and Sainsburys to get my GF stuff, so I don’t want to add a third shop. I could of course use one of the excellent markets, but that would mean shopping in three places.
