The Anonymous Widower

Ladies In Red Hats

When I was in Liverpool Street station, there was a large group of ladies in red hats.

Ladies In Red Hats

It turns out, they were on the way to their Christmas lunch. There is more about Red Hatters here.

This group certainly seemed to be living along with their motto of Live, Love, Laugh.

I am reminded of an old story of my late wife, C.

She used to be a member of the Cameron Group, that visited prisoners in Holloway prison. The prisoners used to refer to some of the visitors of the do-gooder tendency as the Ladies in Pink Hats.

  1. They certainly look very jolly! Never heard of the movement until your post but I do remember the poem they take their name from; as teenagers I think we felt that was a very good way to grow old. I’m still under 50 but I do wear a red hat, so I shall keep an eye out for them!

  2. The poem is by Jenny Joseph, a few years ago I dressed a pantomime cast and I put the “old lady” in purple with the red hat, and satin gloves, and we provided some fake railings for her to run her stick along. It was a bit part, she was only on a few minutes, and half the audience roared and the other half looked bemused as to why the others were laughing. A friend bought the official red hatters scarf from US when I turned 50.
