Tottenham Hale Station – 1st October 2018

These pictures show the progress being made at Tottenham Hale station.

Note.

  1. The third platform at Tottenham Hale station is taking shape.
  2. The steelwork is up for the lift towers.
  3. A lot of the third track and the electrification is in place.

I am also coming to a couple of conclusions.

  • There appears to be enough space alongside the third track to insert a fourth.
  • The Ferry Lane road bridge though may need to be rebuilt to get the fourth track through.

Progess also appears to be in-line with completion of the station and the third track before the end of 2019.

  1. Well as far as I am aware the STAR project is still supposed to be on track for the May 2019 timetable change

    • I hope so, as it will be very useful!

I still can’t work out where the four trains per hour from Stratford will terminate. Will it be Meridian Water or will they go further North?

      • I have been looking at this and all I can find is that they are ‘inserting’ 2 extra tph into the current 2 tph Stratford to Broxbourne service. I believe the latter service will be unchanged and will run through the current platform 1 going North and Platform 2 going South at Tottenham Hale. The new additional 2tph service will only run form Stratford to Merdian Water and will use Platform 3 at Tottenham Hale when running Northbound and Southbound, ie it will be a shuttle service. I don’t believe the track North of Meridian Water will not be connected to the mainline, which seems crazy to me, but I think this wasn’t done due to cost pressure.

  2. Oops, I got my platforms mixed up, Platform 1 and 2 above should be swapped. I am not sure if the new platform will be numbered as 3. Other than that I believe the above is correct.

  3. Perhaps, they have decided to do the connection North of Meridian Water station, once they have shut Angel Road station and cleared the site. They probably don’t know what nasties they’ll find buried under the platforms and sorting it will be easier, if it only had lines on one side.

Splitting the services so that at Tottenham Hale, Liverpool Street services used the existing platform and Stratford services used the new platform, would mean that up to probably twelve train per hour could easily go to each destination. Currently, eight go to Liverpool Street and two go to Stratford. But there are also four Overground trains between Liverpool Street and Chingford.

So Liverpool Street gets twelve tph and Stratford four tph. But Stratford could easily handle twelve tph if the High Meads Loop was used to turn the trains, as on the Wirral Line in Liverpool.

Greater Anglia’s proposed Stansted-Stratford services could use the loop, as they used to years ago.

This development has cunning plan, written all over it.

  4. It’s a pity they can’t just extend some Overground trains from Stratford to new Meridian Water Station thus providing new through journey opportunities with at least Maridian Water transferred to TFL Overground.

I believe space for a 4th track exists as this route will one day become part of Crossrail 2 at northern end of route .

    • You could be right about Meridian Water. Who knows what’s happening?

Four-tracking through Tottenham Hale is the easy bit cimpared to further North like Waltham Cross!
