Electrification West Of Cardiff Central Station
These pictures show erected gantries for the electrification to the West of Cardiff Central station.
I have been sent a map of the proposed works and facilities for the South Wales Metro. This snippet shows the lines to the West of Cardiff Central station.
Note.
- Electrified lines are shown in blue and unelectrified ones in black.
- The South Wales Main Line is shown as a feint line going East-West to the North of Ninian Park station.
- Trains for Barry Island, Bridgend, Cardiff Airport, Maesteg and Penarth go via Grangetown station.
- Tram-trains for Radyr will go via Ninian Park station.
It looks like tram-trains emerging out of Canton Depot will have immediate access to 25 KVAC overhead electrification.

All maintenance on the tram/Trains will be done at the new Taffs Well Depot and as far as ive seen will not be stabled at Canton. Only the Tri-Mode Flirts and other TFW stock will be stabled there. In terms of OHL only the main line platforms are being electrified currently. This means platforms 6-8 which are used exclusively for METRO trains would have no time to pan up and down even if a small section was electrified between Canton and the station.

I think we can rest assured that the tram-yrains will be able to bridge the gap between Cardiff Central and Canton stations using battery power, unless they provide an electrified route..

Oh yes that wont be a problem. Just making the point Canton to Central wont have any electrical overhead equipment useful to the metro project. Though there will be gantry equipment overhead (eg portal) both east and west over the metro lines. As i understand it only the brickyard is being electrified and the associated point work to get from platforms 0-4 accordingly. It will interesting to see if they electrify the reliefs lines through Cardiff Central as they planed to do originally. As they will be pretty useless.
