A Date in My Diary
Last night, the BBC repeated the program about the Coventry Blitz. It reminded me that I shall be going to see Ipswich at Coventry on New Year’s Day. I shall of course visit both cathedrals.
I was talking to an Italian tourist at that I met at Mallaig about other places to go in the UK and I suggested Coventry. He mentioned that the verb to coventrate, or lay waste by areial bombing, is now incorporated into the Italian language.
Into German as well: “coventriert” (coined by Goebbels).

I found that too!
Did you know that there’s a memorial to the women pilots of WW2 at Ipswich airport? Or I fond some references to it!

I didn’t know that. I wonder if Veronica Volkersz is commemorated. I only mention this because I recently bought a copy of her autobiography. She joined the ATA during the war and was the first woman to fly an operational jet fighter, a Meteor III which she transported from the Gloster factory to RAF Molesworth in September 1945.
