Florida Tourism

I can’t understand why anybody would want to go to the United States for a holiday and especially the state of Florida. After all according to this list from an official web site, they have executed 69 people since 1976.

I did hear though on Radio 5 this morning, that the clean-up after the Gulf oil spill has gone well and that the beaches are clean and tourism is on the rise.

But then you have the murders of James Cooper and James Kouzaris

You wouldn’t catch me going.

It would appear that the murderer of the two Englishmen, is just 16 and will be tried as an adult and could face the death penalty.

So at least Florida has its priorities right.  Tourism is more important than cleaning up crime.

Surely to improve tourism, they must do the other.  But of course without using the death penalty.  But then American justice is not about justice, it’s about vengeance.

  1. Have to slightly disagree with you James on this one.

The two James’s…were unlucky. Murders sadly take place..anywhere, anytime. People meet sticky ends…anytime anywhere. Its how it is. There is more to the story than has so far emerged. It doesnt make sense to me why they were in that part of Sarasota…

I have been to visit Florida on 3 occasions…to the Naples area on the Gold Coast. Wonderful place…as a Brit…made to feel welcome, as relatively few Brits visit Naples…..
Loved the flora and fauna…even the alligators on Alligator Alley. This is the road between Miami..and Naples..a wide road with high fencing at each side of the carriageway..to prevent the alliagtors taking a walk onto the road.. The pairs of red eyes watching…easily visible at night. There are some boatway access points…and some folks to take food to the ‘gators….

There are certain parts of Sheffield that I wouldnt feel safe…as a woman…but I never felt in the least at risk where I have been in Florida…

Its all about how you deal with situations..and how you look after yourself..

  2. It is a little disingenuous to claim the whole of the US is guilty as a result of retention of the death penalty in the US. There are 17 states that do not have the death penalty and many people, but not a majority, who would abolish it tomorrow if they could.
I am against the death penalty and know many Americans who agree with me. I find the Americans extemely friendly and caring, especially in New England.
We have a sister company in the US that sell, implement and support our software, and with one exception, they are all very caring and thoughful people. The one exception in a nice guy, except for being very “old fashioned” about how to treat anyone who breaks the law.
Why disingenuous? Because I suspect we would still have the death penalty here if we had a referendum on it. Those planning to vote Yes in the coming AV referendum should think on this, as we could end up being governed by a party who would simply extend the scheme to get the lowest common denominator for every decision.

  3. I agree, people get killed in many places. In some countries, the perpetrators are subjected to death penalty by much crueller means than in US as well.

I do plan to visit US, I have friends and family there

And I will be voting Yes on referendum, although I would prefer a good system of true PR
