The Second Tragedy of September 11, 2011

The attacks on this day were awful and no words can express the damage done to individual and collective lives.

The second tragedy of this event, is that Bush and Blair pursued such a misguided strategy afterwards that they made a second serious attack more likely to happen.

To show how badly they performed, you just have to look at how many people think the attacks didn’t happen and were an event staged by the CIA and the Israelis to get at Muslims.  Or something else equally false and bizarre!

We should probably have gone into Afghanistan, but Iraq now looks in the eyes of nearly everybody to be a colossal mistake.  Although saying that, Saddam was a cruel tyrant and had to go, if only to protect his own people.  But the Arab world seems to specialise in people like him.  Just look at Syria, Tunisia, Libya, Algeria and Egypt.  And don’t get me going on places like Saudi Arabia and a few others.  How many women would like to live in those countries?

The attacks gave us a chance to deal with the real problems of the world.  But we just made it worse, by our vengeful actions and our complete disregard for human rights at Guantanamo and other places we are just starting to know about.

  1. I have spoken to sensible, well educated British born Muslims who firmly believe US was behind 9/11. I was shocked by their certainty. And I have thought a lot about this. In the end I realised that if the attacks had happened in a Middle Eastern Muslim nation, apparently at the hands of a Western govt such as US, I would find it comparatively easy and considerably more comfortable to believe that the attack had been carried out by a group other than a Western govt.

I know a great many Muslims, men and women. Many of the women, especially those born in Muslim countries actually LIKE the way they are treated. The whole mindset is different to ours. One group of young women actually told me that they choose to cover up because they dont want men having “impure thoughts” from seeing them. So whilst I wouldnt like it, I am aware that many women are happy. Not all by any means, but a majority are.

    • I’m getting rather fed up with all the 9/11 coverage in the media. It is time to move on now. i know how terrible it is to lose two close members of your family in a short space of time. I can’t say how I would have acted if one of my children had died in 9/11, but that doesn’t stop me feeling that by droning on about how bad the attacks were and incidentally how successful the terrorists were, that we aren’t encouraging others, to have a go. After all there have been serious attacks that have killed scores in many places over the last few years and did 9/11 show these psychopaths, what can be done.
