Why Should I Pick Up The Tab For The Vanity or Stupidity of Others?

It looks like the French breast implants are not fit for purpose and that the French government will pay for their removal according to this report.

The report also says that there are up to 40,000 women with these implants in the UK and 250 have already contacted their lawyers.

Obviously, there are two classes of women, who have plastic surgery on their breasts; those that have suffered from breast cancer or perhaps an accident and the vane.

I don’t see why I should pay for any rectification surgery for the latter.  After all they were stupid enough to have the operation in the first place and should accept the consequences.

The NHS is the National Health Service and those that bring problems on themselves should make an extra contribution.

C once did a divorce for a plastic surgeon.  He told her, never to underestimate peoples’ vanity.  He didn’t bother, as it made him a fair amount of money and enabled him to do operations that mattered on cancer and accident victims and children with birth defects.

In the current case it would appear that in the end, the real winners will be the lawyers.  Just as they were in this other case.

  1. In countries that have public healthcare, it’s cheaper for the taxpayers to pay for the removal of those implants than to pay for cancer treatments later.

    • Your logic assumes every woman who has the implant will get cancer. That is certainly not the case, as a proportion will have no problems at all. So perhaps the implants come out, when problems arise.

The NHS is for the benefit of sick people. Not for those, who bring serious problems on themselves. A doctor told me recently that the NHS will go bust within thirty years because of the number of obese people, who drink and smoke too much. That is actually a much bigger problem.

  2. Ah James, its the old “authors of our own predicament” chestnut. Should fat people get heart treatment, should smokers get cancer treatment. Taken to its extreme only rape victims would be entitled to maternity care.

    • I think it was Roy Lilly’s suggestion, that everybody should have a yearly health check and if they drink or eat too much or smoke, they should get the necessary help to cut down or give up in the case of smoking. It’s been tried in some countries and done properly it works and saves the health service money.

Vanity cosmetic surgery is a rather different matter in most cases and surgeons are all to willing to do it for the money, without pointing out the risks. One of the side effects of this breast implant scare, is that there may well be a drop in the number of operations done in sensible countries.
