Robert Comes Home

I like to see old engines and other pieces of industrial history displayed at places like stations.

Robert has now been put back at Stratford station and as you casn see from the picture, it has a proper information board.

Some might have commissioned an expensive sculpture, but surely old engines like this are cheaper and just as interesting.

  1. Am inclined to agree, especially as some modern sculptures are plain weird! There is one called The Dream at the side of the M62 in StHelens, and modesty forbids me tell you what it looks like from a distance as you are driving from Manchester to Liverpool!

    • I’d far rather that we used old pieces of industrial heritage and labelled them properly, than some of the street art I’ve seen, Although good street art is also to be welcomed.

  2. Agree with you both, not only Industrial Heritage Art, but also the Nostalgia, of our early life.
Steam Engines were more than a working engine, the sounds & sights were a memorable experience.

A few years ago; I was standing at Adelaide Station, on my way to The Alice {Alice Springs}, when a toddler, a young girl about 3 or 4, screamed out . . .” Mummy, a Tank Engine” {The Sandfly Tank Engine was a static display} . . .

“Thomas the Tank Engine” . . . series, has been wonderful for Children, connecting them to our past Heritage.

    • This engine was being inspected, when I took the pictures by a small Chinese boy and his mother.
