Should Well-Off Pensioners Pay More Tax?
I’m not in favour of the proposal of the Liberal Democrats that well-off pensioners, like myself should pay more tax.
If the government keeps the money, it’ll only spend it on something of which I disapprove, like more quangos to employ the so-called great and good, many of whom have never done a real day’s work in their lives.
I prefer to give more than equivalent donations to charities of my choice, which I do on my birthday each year, in thanks for surviving another twelve months!
You have more than a million pounds? Wow. (I’m not making a value judgment. Just reacting.)
I don’t know how the UK tax laws work, but here in USA if you give to non-profits and qualified charities, you are allowed to deduct it from tax you would otherwise owe. Our government spends on plenty of things I disapprove of also, but I hadn’t heard the term “quango” before. After looking that word up I see we have them too, but no equivalent acronym for what they are. Thanks for expanding my vocabulary!

I helped develop the methodology for modern project management and we sold the company for a lot of money. Since then, I’ve developed another idea, that made a few million. My wife was also a barrister, who earned abiyr £50k a year. Remember too, in the UK, it doesn’t always cost a fortune to live. For instance in London at 60, you get free public transport and I don’t have a car, mortgage or any dependents.
You don’t get tax relief on money given to charities, but they are entitled to claim gift Aid on it from the government. So if I five a charity £100, they would generally get £128. I know those figures are correct, as I gave £100 to a charity recently.
