Are Pound Coins The New Threepenny Bits?

I know pound coins are worth eighty times more than the old brass threepenny bits, but they do have some of their qualities.

I was in Carluccio’s yesterday afternoon having tea and some polenta cake, and after  I’d paid my bill early in cash, I found I had a pile of about half-a-dozen pound coins in front of me. I then started playing with them, by doing things like building stacks, just as I used to do the same thing with threepenny bits over forty years ago. After all, they are about the same weight and have the same clunky feel!

  1. Absolutely . . . Check the Value of Currency against some common purchases from our childhood to now : In OZ a Pie as a kid 20 Cents, today $4.80; a Paper 10cents, today $1.20 . . .

    We even use Big Mac Hamburgers to compare costs {today} across countries . . .

    But how about comparing Hamburgers, Fish & Chips and Milkshakes or Cokes across the ages in UK or EU etc. . . . Yes . . . Pound Coins are our Threepenny Bits . . .

    The big Concern in Oz, they are developing a $5 Coin {our next threepenny bit}

  2. We have £2 coins and they are just too big. The 50p coins too don’t in my view have the same playful feel.
