Would This Help People Stop Smoking?
On my bus this morning a young lady was reading a book called How To Stop Smoking.
As I got out I wished her the best of luck. She smiled back and said it was difficult.
So did my encouragement help?
I don’t and never will know! But just as women, who are pregnant often wear a badge saying Baby On Board, would it help to give up smoking, if you wore a badge saying I’m Trying To Give Up.
Perhaps others would offer words of encouragement that helped.
if it was the book by Alan Carr she was reading, she stands a good chance of giving up. My younger daughter was a smoker from earlyish teens (when I believed her that the smell of smoke other clothes was from the school bus), until she was 22. She had had a couple of goes at giving up, but not succeeded. She used the Alan Carr book, and hasn’t smoked since, she now 27. There was a chapter in it for friends and family, which told us how to help. The one I remember most was that it said we should tell the person quitting how nice they smelled as soon as they weren’t smoking. Which became a running joke in the family. I am very proud of her for giving up, many of the friends she used to smoke on the school bus with are still smoking.

Somebody once told me that giving up smoking was easy; they had done it loads of times. Seriously though, smoking IS easy to give up, I did it when my children were young as I didn’t want them to smoke. It really depends on how much one wants to do it.

Neither C or myself ever smoked more than an odd one and none after we were married. But it still didn’t stop all our children from being heavy smokers and it killed one.
