Is Kennington Station Ready For The Extension?

As I passed through Kennington station, this morning, I took these pictures.

Note.

  • Trains turning at Kennington in the loop are signed as not in service.
  • Some of the signage has been updated.
  • It does appear that there is some need for some decorators.

But the biggest problem is that if you need to change direction , at the station, it’s up one steep staircase and down another. The step-free route would mean changing at London Bridge or Waterloo, as these stations have the platforms between the tracks.

  1. At least the sign has Battersea Power Station as it seems some stations have Power Station Battersea !

All that was done here was the addition of several cross passages to allow for greater cross platform interchange.

However, the failure to upgrade Kennington Station to make it fully accessible means that as you mention their is no step free way of changing direction and given the Battersea extension will only be served by west end branch trains those leaving say Battersea wanting to go towards London Bridge Station will have to use stairs .

To think over a billion was spent on the extension some of it privately funded and yet former Mayor Boris Johnson couldn’t be bothered to upgrade Kennington Station!

  2. I do wonder, that if it were being designed now, it would be rather different, given that Crossrail 2 is in the long grass and that there is a need for a lot more housing.
