Solidity Or Speculation, It’s Your Choice

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on Investors Chronicle.

This is the introductory paragraph.

Solid-state batteries are made using a technology that promises massive improvements in lithium-ion battery efficiency and capacity, so a breakthrough could see ranges in electric vehicles (EVs) extended well beyond the few hundred miles that the most advanced models can currently achieve.

It then lists four companies, that are possible investments; Gelion Technologies, Ilika, Superdielectrics and Solid State.

I am sure the technology will break through, but finding the winner will be difficult.

  1. Quantumscape and VW Powerco have just announced a new agreement/licence for mass-producing solid-state battery cells https://ir.quantumscape.com/resources/press-releases/news-details/2024/PowerCo-and-QuantumScape-Announce-Landmark-Agreement-to-Industrialize-Solid-State-Batteries/default.aspx Powerco announced earlier in the year that tests of the alpha version of Q’s latest cell passed with flying colours, and Q plans to release the first beta version later this year. They claim an energy density of over 800 Wh/l, with recharging from 10 to 80 per cent in around 15 minutes. So allow a year or so until the first production cells with a couple of years to build the factory, and there could be a large solid-state production line before the end of the decade.
