Job Scam – Hyde Park Hotel

I’ve stayed in the Hyde Park Hotel and very good it was too.  But it is now called the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park Hotel, so when I got the e-mail below I thought something was not correct. It now turns out there is now a new hotel called The Hyde Park Hotel, so I suspect that the scam is based on the fact that the hotel has just opened and it has a very good name to use to fool people.

Good day, I am applying through online and Hyde Park Hotel send me an application form and other documents regarding my application. I’ve done in the documents for for signing with that documents and email them back for the documents. Then day past they e-mail me back again they advice me to Print the Employment form out and fill it up then forward the filled Employment form to UK Home Immigration  Office for your work visa process, through their e-mail contact address, ukhomeimmigrationbureau@yahoo.co.uk

Then after that the UK Home Immigration email me back they are requiring me to pass some of the necessary documents in order to process my visa. I have pass all the documents except one of their requirements and that is the LABOUR AUTHORIZATION CERTIFICATE from the UK Labour Department Office with their contact e-mail address, uklabourdepartmentoffice@googlemail.com

They require me to contact that e-mail address so I have send an e-mail that I am inquiring on their office about the Labour Authorization Certificate. Then day past I have receive an e-mail from UK Labour Department Office. It contains all of the clues; e-mail addresses from Yahoo and Googleman, expensive +4470 phone numbers, bad and US spellings etc.

Note that Wilson Larry or Larry Wilson does not seem to exist and I can’t find any other posting of this scam on the Internet, so it may be a very new scam.

Don’t ever send these crooks any money.

Jim Bennett

I get a lot of spam.  This is an interesting one.

My name is Jim .E. Bennett, I am a citizen of United State of America and the Executive Director of SPD Corporation, a multi-national oil corporation operating from London-England, UK. I am seeking your assistance to retrieve the sum of ( fifteen Million Dollars Only), consisting of two Consignments boxes.

This money was acquired from over invoice and it was accompanied by a diplomat to the U.S.A, my reason for this is because I have been cheated out of my entitlements by the company for too long simply because I am not a British Citizen. The details of the diplomat will be given to you if you indicate your interest to help me.

The two boxes content is $15M and for your help I am ready to release 30% to you, for security reasons the consignments was registered to be (  CONFIDENTIAL DIPLOMATIC DOCUMENTS), and I can explain why it was declared so. Bear in mind that the diplomat is not aware of the content of the two Consignments boxes , it has been there for the past 1 month as I’m looking for a reliable partner.

I will be leaving the country immediately the consignments is delivered to you for my private investment and I have vowed never to step back into London, England. Please, I need your urgent response before my plans to leave the company is discovered.

Please if you are not willing and interested in helping me kindly delete this e-mail from your computer and pretend you never got it.

I’m pretending I haven’t got this e-mail, so if you read this, then please pass it on, so that no-one gets conned by this crook.

One point is that he says he will be leaving London immediately the consignments are delivered.  Funny, that but the e-mail came from China.

HMRC Fraud

There has been talk on the radio this morning and in the papers about various phishing attacks purporting to be tax refunds from HRMC.

Note that HMRC do not do refunds by e-mail, so any e-mails you get from them about refunds are fake and are designed to empty your bank account, after you have given them your bank details.

Here’s one I got earlier.

HMRC Spam E-Mail

These points should be noted.

  1. It is obviously spam, not least because my ISP has actually marked it as possible spam in the header.
  2. Bear in mind the fact too, that my accountant does my tax return and I think that HMRC don’t know my e-mail address.
  3. It is a good idea to learn how to read the Message Headers using your e-mail program.  I use Outlook and this page in About.com tells you how to do it.  In the headers for this e-mail, you can see there are lots of .br’s, which mean that at some point the e-mail has visited Brazil.  Not the quickest route to Suffolk from the HMRC.
  4. They do show that the e-mail came to my standard e-mail address.  Which means it wasn’t a genuine e-mail, as I use a special e-mail address for all financial transactions.  Always use a different e-mail address for normal communications and financial transactions.
  5. The To: address in the e-mail is securemail@hmrc.gov.uk.  Nearly all companies send important e-mails to the e-mail address you have given them.
  6. The value of the refund is shown as 988.50 GBP.  I’m always suspicious of this, as the £ sign needed to show the value properly is not available on non-UK keyboards.  About half of my genuine on line purchases use the £ sign and others use GBP.  But phishing attacks nearly always use GBP.
  7. Click Here to submit you tax refund request.  Note you instead of your.  I know the HMRC can be stupid at times, but they don’t make spelling mistakes like this, as if they did, they would be a laughing stock in the tabloids.
  8. There are other grammatical errors and I don’t think the HMRC would use Best Regards.

You should always read these spam e-mails.  That way, you will understand more and more what they look like and you won’t get caught out.

Reporting instructions for these sort of e-mails are on the HMRC web site.

Homeopathy Protests Outside Boots

It would appear that today there are to be protests outside Boots because of their stocking of homeopathic remedies.  I like the fact that the protest is being organised by the Merseyside Skeptics Society.

The protest will take the form of a mass overdose on homeopathic remedies.  As they contain nothing but sugar and water, the only result might be a small amount of weight gain.

Clare Balding on Radio 5 then talked about arnica to a jockey.  Now arnica is not a homeopathic remedy but a natural one.  I have given it to horses in the past and it helps stop bruising during castration.  But it is only diluted to the same sort of levels as a cough syrup, not to the parts per billion billions that you get with homeopathy.  As I said in an e-mail to Clare.

Arnica, of which the active ingredient is helenalin, is a natural remedy, which is partially understood scientifically. Aspirin and many other drugs, have similar natural roots.  These have absolutely nothing to do with homeopathy.  Natural remedies are valid treatments and work, the others are beloved of snake-oil salesmen and are just to relieve fools of their money.

One has to question Boots decision to sell these quack cures, especially as they admitted to the House of Commons that there is no evidence that they work.

But anybody who has investigated them properly knows that too.  But think how many snake-oil salesmen would be put out of business, if this was the general belief.

Reporting Internet Abuse

There has been a lot of reporting lately about cyberbullying and abuse on social networking sites.  In fact the BBC breakfast phone-in was about this subject.

I have no experience of reporting problems on social networking sites, but for years I have been fighting a campaign against on-line fraudsters using the Internet and mobile phones.  I have reported endless people for abuse to e-mail organisations and so have many others I know who work in this field.

No service provider have ever informed me that they have taken serious action. As these scams are still occurring, it would appear that nothing has been done.  I have found that the same e-mail addresses keep coming up in different scams.

Why?

These companies want the traffic to continue and as they run tight ships, they can’t afford the methods that everyone knows would stop all of these practices.

It is exactly the same with social networking sites.  Put a button to report abuse on a site and the abusers will go elsewhere, so a site that does it, will lose traffic and advertising revenue, which is of course geared to traffic.

I also have a granddaughter and she was showing me an innocent site aimed at her age, with educational games, quizzes and puzzles.  There was nothing wrong with the site, but some of the advertising on it, was promoting all the foods and snack products that you shouldn’t give to children of her age.

All of these problems are driven by commercial interests, most of which are headquartered outside of the jurisdiction of the UK and the EU.  So in truth we are just whistling in the dark and the sites will never change.

All these indignant phone-ins are just free publicity for these social networking sites.  They would have had to pay millions to get the same effect.  I’d love to see how many new members have joined them in the last few days.

Congratulations once again.

Copyright (c) 2009 Bbc.co.uk national lottery Online Promotion Inc.

Some points to note, which apply to nearly all of these scams.

  1. I got four of these e-mails all to undisclosed-recipients.  Did I win four times?  No!  I didn’t even win once!
  2. There are numerous spelling and grammatical mistakes.  Look at the heading for a start, which contains Headquarter and programed.
  3. Capitalisation is bad too.
  4. The e-mail address is in Hong Kong.
  5. The phone number may well be one that costs quite a lot for each minute.
  6. The copyright notice has Inc. in it.  The UK does not use this American form.

Remember no-one has ever won a lottery they didn’t enter.

One thing that should be done is that the UK should tighten up how 07 numbers are allocated.  Many seem to be used for frauds.  It might be difficult to check everybody before they get a number, but after any hint of fraud, the numbers should be cancelled immediately.

I needed a good laugh and this crook made me chuckle.
