Crossrail In The New Yorker

According to Wikipedia, the New Yorker  is an American magazine of reportage, commentary, criticism, essays, fiction, satire, cartoons, and poetry.

This serious article from the magazine, which discusses the archaeology around the new rail line, is well worth a read.

A Profound Thought From George Clooney

This was supposedly said by George Clooney in an interview with the US edition of Esquire magazine.

Now that every human being on earth has a camera phone, where are all those UFO pictures?

Remember you used to see those pictures. Some guy just happened to have a Polaroid when the UFOs appeared?

Either it was all bullshit or my theory is that the Martians have decided, “Don’t go down there, man. All those fuckers have cameras now.”

He may not have said it, but think about it.

George though isn’t totally right, as I don’t have a camera in my phone.

Stupid Letter of the Week

This is from Private Eye, but it is worth repeating here.

Spot the flaw in this letter to Eye reader Carl Mungal, who wrote to Sky to cancel his late mother’s account.

“I’m sorry to hear about your loss and would like to offer my condolences.  As this account is not registered in your name, I;m unable to process your cancellation request.  To be able to cancel the above account, we’ll need the account holder to contact us.”

It’s not the first time an organisation got their bereavement process wrong!  Every one should have a simple set of rules that they apply.  They might even get more business, as it would show them to be someone who cares.

Unintelligent Spam Filters

The Beaver is a respected Canadian magazine.

Now it has had to change its name, to Canadian History because it’s content can’t get through spam filters.

When are people going to grow up and not be so prudish, too?  Remember we had the fuss about Tyson Gay.

Readers Digest

So the Readers Digest has gone into administration.  Although reading their web site doesn’t show anything is amiss.

I’ve never read it, but I have put quite a few pieces of their junk mail into the bin.  Hopefully, that will stop now!

But perhaps it shows how we’ve moved on and their publication is past its sell-by date.  After all the US parent had to file for bankruptcy protection last year.
