Trying the iPad

I went into PC-World at Tottenham Hale to try an iPad.  The reason is that I need a simple to use computer to take with me on my travels.  Currently, I use a Samsung Netbook, but the keyboard isn’t the best for my hands.

So what do I need to do on the move.

  • Browse the Internet.
  • Send and receive e-mails.
  • Update this blog.
  • Buy travel tickets.
  • I might want to write a few applications.
  • I would also want it o be able to run my software Daisy, as I feel the two concepts are made for each other.

The iPad seems to fit a lot of these criteria and I was also able to use the touch screen keyboard easily.  The last bit surprised me.

But the trouble with the iPad is that it’s an Apple product and is more about style rather than substance.  I also feel strongly that the device needs to be Windows-based so that I can run Daisy. That may seem a bit of a small need, but just wait until I find a suitable Windows-based one and install Daisy!

Thanks though to Kevin in PC-World, who showed me professionally what the device can do!

  1. James,

I’m a Windows user, but love my iPad.

Whilst out and about, the native iPad interfaces for email and web browsing are superb and you can never underestimate how nice it is to have a device the comes on and goes off instantly, every time.

In addition to the built in apps, I additionally use the “LogMeIn Ignition” app to provide smooth remote control of a Windows machine for when I need to use Visual Studio or other Windows apps on the move.

Unfortunately, although Windows based tablets may appear soon, I fear that they are going to end up doing too much background processing (including anti-virus related overheads) to provide the smooth experience you get from the closed iOS ecosystem, especially the instant on/off.

    Hope this helps,

    KP

  2. I must admit that I’m tempted, but I know that Daisy would be a superb interface to data on a pad-type device.

I take your point about viruses thought, but that is probably best handled by other means, such as a better browser and e-mail program.

Are you John’s son? How is he by the way. I’m in Scotland next week and may take in Glasgow, as I want to see it. I’m going from Edinburgh to Inverness, Kyle of Lochalsh and then back on the sleeper from Mallaig.
