A Spoonfull of Lord Sugar
In The times today, Lord Sugar states that the rules on football clubs going bust should be changed. He says, if they do, it should be goodbye and you start at the bottom of the pyramid again.
What sense! But then he does talk a bit more than most football chairmen or politicians.
I would go one further with football clubs. here in Manchester we have two very well known clubs. For which the city of Manchester gets quite a lot of kudos, and probably retail income as well.
But the only connection the teams have is that their grounds are in Manchester – indeed I think Man U ground is not actually in Manchester, but in Trafford.
I doubt ANY of the players were born here, or grew up here, or learnt to play football here. In fact as far as I can make out, most of them werent even born in UK.

Ithink Man U used to be in the old borough of Stretford. Some towns get quite a lot of income from football fans, both visiting and home. Strangely, Ipswich does quite well in this respect as the ground is close to the town centre, so a lot go and eats before the match. In this blog, I’m trying to get visiting fans to explore the area they visit, but some grounds like Scunthorpe are in a complete desert for gluten-free food or culture. Also, police policies often mean that fans are kept out of the town centre. Ipswich police don’t do that and just make sure fans don’t drink in the same pubs. When Ipswich were in the Premiership, I seem to remember a fugure of nearly a million pounds of spend for each home match. So you can see the importance of getting fans to visit.

I live within a mile of Stockport County ground. Mostly that is fine, but there are some teams who have a bad reputation and when they are playing at County ground, all the shops close!
