Annoyances On Rail Ticket Web Sites

Too often you fill in a page to buy a ticket and then click buy, only to find that your entry has been rejected because you haven’t clicked a box to do something they think is important.  So you have to fill it all in again.  It would be much better to have a little pop-up box, asking the question you haven’t answered.

This is not specifically a train probem, but they seem to be the worst offender.

Obese People and Obese Cases

The two most crowded jouneys, I’ve had so far have been on cross-country journeys, which for some reason seem to have a large proportion of obese passengers and masses of oversize cases, which are usually parked in the aisles.

On my journey to Cheltenham, the window seat beside me, had been booked by an obese man, who couldn’t get into the seat.  So I had two!

Are we making trains big enough?

Probably the cross country trains need to be larger, but the others seem to cope, as the proportion of oversized people and cases is smaller.

92 Clubs – Day 11 – Coventry, Crawley, Crewe

This was three trips out of London and it was quite a long day.

I left Euston in late morning for Coventry and it was then a twenty minute walk to the bus station at the least customer-friendly interchange I’ve found in the UK.  The town has form here, as on January the first, they didn’t provide any transport to the match except taxis.

It was then a twenty five minute wait for the bus, which wasn’t good, as I missed one, as they don’t announce the bus at the stop and you can’t see the numbers from the gate.  Is this why in Cambridge, the buses always come nose in to the stand, so you can read where they are going?

The ground was deserted as this picture shows.

It was then a walk round a retail park to find the bus home.  Guess what, there were no signs to the bus station.  Eventually, a bus inspector told me to walk out the back and get a bus from the main road.  It was a 48 and it got me reasonably quickly back to the centre.  It was still quite a walk to the train station, but not as much as from the bus station.

From Euston, i took the Victoria line to Victoria and tried to get a ticket to Crawley.  Everything was rather busy and as I had plenty of time, I decided to use my freedom Pass to get me East Croydon, where I could get a return to Crawley. It should have been easy, but no-one seemed to know, which was the next platform for an East Croydon train. I was sent to platform 4, then 18, then 14 and finally back to 16. Organisation? No! Headless-chickenism of the worst kind.

Eventually, I got to Crawley stadium and the taxi driver took the picture.

I had been unsure, as to whether I would do Crewe, when I returned to London, but as Virgin have no rush-hour restrictions, I took the 18:10 to the famous railway junction.

It was raining when I got there and just walked the hundred metres or so to the deserted ground.

Thirty minutes after arriving in Crewe, I was back on the train south.

Banks and Trusteer

There was an article in The Times last Saturday talking about how some banks ask you to load software called Trusteer on your computer to protect yourself.

I won’t! And if my bank insists I do, there are plenty more other banks out there.

Just having the software on your machine, is an indication, that you may have secure data there.

All of my secure work is done on a machine, which is unattached to my network and nothing is written down, that would be any use to a criminal. That is unless he could find where my passwords are stored in my safe deposit box with C’s jewellery. And that is ten miles from where I live!

I’m not saying that I know more about security than banks, but I mistrust deals like this, especially, where keylogging is involved. The banks should follow Zopa’s lead and create an unbreakable and totally secure login, that is impossible for a criminal to use, as unless he is a mind reader, he won’t know answers to the questions they ask.

Masterseek Business Directory

I’ve had 52 e-mails from a group of spammers called the Masterseek Business Directory in the last 24 hours.  They want me to pay $149, so that my web sites go in their business directory.  There is an unsubscribe link, but I suspect that using it will just verify that the e-mail address was correct.

There is some more about this group of idiots here. He uses the well known advice concerning barge poles.

I have deleted them all.
