A Bus in an Brighter Shade of Red

This bus had been painted in a rather odd shade of red or more likely orange.

  1. Wow A Good Looking British Design . . . Not only a Double Decker Bus, but a really inviting form of travel.

    • This is a Wright Gemini 2, built in Northern Ireland. There’s more about it here.

The one shown is a non-hybrid version from 1959 with a big Cummins diesel, although most delivered now have hybrid drive with a small Ford diesel. Those are quieter and use quite a lot less fuel. When I talk about a standard Wright bus, it’s one of these. London must have thousands and you find them all over the UK and Ireland. They also sell them in CKD kits to Singapore and Hong Kong. Wright incidentally, is a private company, still owned by the Wright family and have even sold systems to places like Las Vegas. They are developing the bigger New Bus for London, which can be adapted to any countries needs, as it’s built from a kit of parts. They developed it in just twelve months.

The Geminis have a floor which is totally flat and low with an entrance and an exit, so passengers, wheelchairs and buggies get straight in and out. The driver does take money, but most in London use passes or pre-payment cards.

All bus routes should be run as London does theirs, with maps at stops and information on the bus, so you know where you are. You can even text a bus stop, to know when the next bus is coming, all over London.

The 38 incidentally is a high-density route, with buses every 2-3 minutes or so, all the way across the centre of London.
