Cyclehoops
I hadn’t heard of Cyclehoop until I saw a piece about how they have got a large export order from Vancouver, on the strength of their presence at the Olympics.
I like them, as hopefully, they’ll tidy up bikes on the streets and we’ll get less clutter that I’ll walk into. Admittedly, I do it less now, as my eyesight may not be perfect, but I’ve learned how to use it properly.
One thing I like about the design is that they are compact and can be very bright, so they aren’t among that large class of street furniture you trip over.
I’ll be looking out for some in use.
On another matter, their web site is very professional.
They also fulfil my theory, that there are many ways to redesign what we already have.
Looking at the gallery on the web site, you see too that it’s not a one-product company. They’re more a solutions company, that you go to when you want to park any number of bikes, from one to several thousands.
Cycle Hoops . . . nothing better, than Smart Design and unlikely to cause others problems.

If you look at their web site, their list of customers is impressive. They’re also made in Britain.

We do bring in labour, but most comes from East Europe, as it’s part of the EU. The Poles especially, also understand our culture, work hard and fit in well. But then we absorbed a million Poles after WW2. They’ve also had a good education. Opposite me, the cafe has been rebuilt by Romanian builders, who’ve been in the UK for some years. You can’t fault anything. The only problem is we’ve had a bit of problem with east European gangs, but that seems to have been dealt with.
The guy, who designed the Cyclehoop has a Chinese name and a degree from a British University, but the products are made in Britain. With modern manufacturing techniques, it’s often cheaper to manufacture here than in China. I’ve often believed that the reason, a lot of people offshore manufacturing, is that it gives a lot of scope for money to end up in the buyer’s pocket. I feel strongly about that, as my father lost a lot of his business because of a corrupt buyer. When the buyer was ill, they found out he was taking bribes, so they changed all his suppliers. My father, who didn’t pay bribes, got chopped anyway.
It’s not just Britain, that’s going the innovation/manufacturing route, but most of old Europe, like The Netherlands, Germany, the Nordic countries and even Belgium. France though, is strangling innovation in red tape.
