LED Street Lights In Sheffield

BBC Breakfast is covering this story in detail.

All street lights in the city are being converted to LED ones, that can be centrally controlled according to the conditions.

I can’t find the story anywhere on the web.

Does it show how low green issues sit in the minds of the average journalist?

Having used LED lights for years, I can’t understand this indifference to a technology that should be rolled out across the country.

An example was given, where Sheffield say they will change the light levels around evening football matches.  Bright as they arrive and leave and low during the match.

How for instance are sensible lighting levels going to help in the fight against crime?

  1. Looks like a great idea to me. You’re right, the reporter didn’t really talk about the green issue. Over the life of the lamps there must be a huge saving and therefore justify the investment that the locals were moaning about. Plus the low light pollution. It should be a nationwide scheme.

    • The biggest savings aren’t actually in street lights, but in the replacement of halogen floodlights with LED ones. I’ve installed some in a previous house and they paid for themselves in two and a half years on electricity savings. If the council changes, I wonder if this will get businesses and householders to change. I also think LED lights deter low-life, as the average burglar thinks that they could be lights with sensors and CCTV. It’ll be interesting to see if Sheffield gets a reduction in street crime.

  2. Aren’t all the criminals watching the football?
    Just kidding.
