Nursing Care In Hospital

It is being reported, that nurses are calling for more compassionate care in hospital.

I’m 65 and last year I collapsed and ended up in hospital. It was a teaching hospital and the doctor asked if I wouldn’t mind being used for interviewing practice by medical students.

It made a miserable time, almost enjoyable! Especially, as some students were attractive female ones.

Do other hospitals encourage their medical and nursing students to do this? It certainly, is a good way to get them up to speed in an important and perhaps neglected part of their training.

  1. My late and much missed dad had an ileostomy. A couple of years before he died he had to go into respite care in a nursing home for 3 weeks after a bad reaction to medication. By the time he went home he had spent with all the nurses, students, care assistants etc showing them what to do, and also talking about his experience of having one – he had it 20 years before he died. He got a lot of satisfaction out of helping these staff.

    • One of the things, the students wanted to learn about was my coeliac disease and how I coped. One extremely attractive Sikh girl from Malaysia, whose father was an eye surgeon in Penang, went through everything. It was good therapy for me too, as she left almost on midnight. I hope she benefited from what we talked about.

One story I heard about care in a hospice, was that they had a placement from a vet, who wanted to get more experience. Because of his experience with animals, he could often diagnose things doctors and nurses couldn’t. Everybody learned a lot!

Let’s face it! Much of healthcare is about relating to the patients and many doctors and nurses have forgotten that! Or never had it in the first place!
