I’m Disappointed With My City

London is one of the most multi-cultural cities in the world, if not the most multi-cultural city.

And I live in one of the most multi-cultural boroughs in London; Hackney.

So you’d think that there would be a big screen somewhere to watch the World Cup.

But I can’t find a public one anywhere in London.

For the last World Cup in 2010, Hackney had a festival with a big screen close to me in Gillette Square. It’s reported here on the Hackney web site.

I’m very disappointed with my city.

  1. Given the news pieces I’ve been reading about the desperate straits of many people in Brazil and their anger over the presence, costs and implicated corruption of the World Cup I’m glad in a sense, being another Hackney dweller. The borough’s long been known for its left-wing politics, but whether the lack of big screens has anything to do with a sense of solidarity I don’t know. Somehow I doubt it.

    • I tried to go to the first game, but a specialist travel agent in London, said that the chaos in Brazil surrounding the first England game will be bad, They told me to spend the money on a trip later to South America.

Concerning the screens, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Brighton and Bristol have big screens, so why not London? There’s only one in Broadgate, where I’ll be going tonight, but they can’t show weekend matches.

  2. Manchester seem to have gone all out on this, there is a beach in the stadium and “appropriate aromas” are being sent out into the stadium – fresh grass and roast dinners apparently – not a clue why!
