Restoring Manchester Victoria Station

I took these pictures as I passed through Manchester Victoria station today.

Some might think, that we spend more time and effort on getting the heritage details perfect, than we do on improving the experience for passengers.

My only hope is that if this space gets used as a restaurant, then it gets one with a bit of quality.

  1. I have no idea what the plans are, but a good restaurant would be a great asset. It is a fair walk from the station to anywhere really nice to eat

    • Network Rail seem to have a policy of trying to keep fast food like McDonalds, Burger King and the others out of flagship stations. They even seem to prefer Pattiserie Valerie to Starbucks. They’ve now got three Carluccio’s in stations – Piccadilly, St. Pancras and Waterloo, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve been asked to make an offer.

But the station is not managed by Network Rail, as is Piccadilly, but by Northern Rail, who may feel something not too upmarket is preferable, given the station’s closeness to the Arena. A similar premises at Kings Cross has been given to Leon, who are best described as healthy fast food.

I’d like to see Leon give it a go!

  2. It will be interesting to see what happens. There are quite a few decent places near Victoria Station, including Dough. And some awful places too. If I am meeting someone for lunch who has come into Victoria, I go to Dough.
