How Many Shoppers Will Mourn The Death Of BHS?

I suspect, I’ve not been into BHS to buy anything this century.

I used to use the one in Ipswich occasionally, as they had a very conveniently placed toilet if you were passing on the way between a lunchtime pub and the football. But now that I live in London, when I go to the football, my route is different and the station and the ground have good toilets as well.

I also used to use their Oxford Street store, as a cut-through from Oxford Circus station to John Lewis, especially when it was raining. But about five years ago, BHS blocked the route off, so that ended my visits to that store.

I shan’t be bothered if all the BHS stores in the country close. And I suspect most people, unless it effects their employment won’t be bothered either.

In fact, it might be better for me, as I wonder if John Lewis will take over the Oxford Street store and use it innovatively with their flagship store next door.

  1. Well, I will miss BHS! They do very nice jerseys, and casual clothes!

  2. I will miss it, because their swimwear is really well fitting, suitable for actually swimming in (a lot of swimwear isn’t) and reasonably priced, and since I swim most days, I need several swimsuits.

I used to buy most of mum’s clothes from there. I like some of their homeware stuff, and lighting as well.

They will be missed by brides on a budget too – they sell well made but inexpensive wedding dresses, fairly plain so you can add a bit of beading or something yourself to personalise it, and they also so adult and children bridesmaid dresses – and if you have a bridesmaid who is too tall for them etc, they will sell the fabric for you to get one made yourself for her. They also do shoes, bags hats, page boys, mother of the bride etc etc. Losing that will have a big impact on brides and their families on limited income. Debenhams also do bridal stuff fairly reasonably but definitely more expensive than BHS.

Children’s wear is also good – when my girls were little we always got their clothes from there, much nicer than M&S; although I don’t buy children’s clothes any more

  3. C used to wear out swimmingcostumes as they got a lot of wear in pools before work. So I used to look for Speedo Endurance ones for triathletes on eBay. Sometimes, you’ could find them for just a few pounds. They last a lot longer.

  4. Speedo aim theirs at athletes – and although I go to the gym most days, and work out/swim for at least an hour on those days, plus mat work at home, I don’t have the body size and shape of a typical athlete.
