Is Manchester Metrolink Expensive?
On my trip to Manchester earlier this week, I used contactless ticketing for two trips on the Manchester Metrolink.
- Piccadilly to Velopark
- VeloPark to New Islington
It cost me £7.40.
On the same day, I went, I took a trip to Glossop and the return cost me £4.30 with a Senior Railcard.
It should have been £3.40p off peak, £4.20p peak. You were charged the uncompleted journey fare (£7.40p) because your tap out was not recorded, or you tapped out twice – effectively starting a new journey.

The above is correct. The maximum you should normally pay is £7 for a daily zone 1-4 travelcard, so if you’re ever charged more than that it means you’ve been charged an additional incomplete journey fare of £4.60 on top of whatever zone travelcard you qualified for. For whatever reason the system thinks you didn’t tap out correctly. You can call the contactless team on 0300 035 035 to see what happened.

There are also rates for people over 60 who are also retired; but not sure if you have to have a local card for that
