Skelmersdale Railway Station Could Finally Happen – If Government Says Yes

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on Lancs Live.

The article is a good summary of why Skelmersdale needs a station.

But it doesn’t mention that any service to Skelmersdale will probably go via Merseyrail’s new station at Headbolt Lane.

  1. If it is only a branch to Wigan, perhaps there can be supplementary bus services to nearby Omskirk if there aren’t already.

  2. There’s quite a good summary of local reaction to the DfT’s refusal to fund this at https://www.lancs.live/news/lancashire-news/skelmersdale-railway-station-agenda-councillors-24598064

Not sure how the decision to give Lpool Region control of Merseyrail will affect this.

    • In my experience at both the University and at ICI in Runcorn, Liverpudlians are the masters at stretching budgets.

Merseyrail Class 508 trains are some of the best maintained and cleanest local trains in the country. They are also the oldest.

Some of the new stations on Merseyside are different, but affordable.

It is my feeling, that the Skelmersdale link will get built and will work well, but it won’t be what is expected.

I could see a single-track battery-electric shuttle from Headbolt Lane.
