My First Ride On A Class 484 Train

These pictures tell the story of my first ride in a Class 484 train.


  1. Ryde Pier Head station could do with a refurbishment.
  2. The train was formed of a pair of two-car units.
  3. The interior shows its origins in London Underground D78 Stock.
  4. There is a fully-functioning information display.
  5. At some stations, there is step-free access between train and platform.

These are a few of my other thoughts.


This was like a D78 Stock train on a good day after a major service.

Operating Speed

I timed the train running along happily at 40 mph on my phone.

Build Quality

More 2020 than 1978.


The single train was running an hourly service.

As time went on it was getting further behind schedule.

Could this have been due to the power supply not being able to power two trains at the same time, in the same place on the line?

I have just looked at the Real Time Trains figures for yesterday and they are documenting power supply and signalling problems.

It also looks like some trains lost time between Ryde St. Johns Road and Brading. Perhaps this section is short on power.

  1. Your report seems like a very fair assessment of what you experienced with a train derived from a forty year old piece of rolling-stock. Nevermind the extensive realisation of new vehicle concepts, I’ll bet Vivarail have done a better job on the refurbishment than what I saw being done for the refurbishment of the Bakerloo Line, 1972 Tube Stock.
    According to the PR,…. “New electricity and signalling cables and equipment were installed across the rail line to improve the line’s resilience and efficiency. The power supply to the line was also upgraded”. Given that SWR generally has received a lot of investment for the lineside power supply it seems reasonable that the Island Line should receive some largesse.
    Either things were abysmal in the days of the old Class 383, ex 1938 Tube Stock or the Class 384 and/or the infrastructure still has some shortcomings.

    • As a Control and Electrical Engineer by training and as I timed the train rolling along happily at forty mph South of Brading, I suspect that it could be power supply limitations, caused by a four-car train working the line.

      I certainly couldn’t complain about the ride quality.

      I shall look this morning to see if Real Time Trains reveal anything.

  2. Apparently, on its first day back the train service was disrupted by a lineside fire and replaced by buses.
