This Hydrogen Bus Will Take You And Your Car To Your Holiday Destination – Topgear
The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on Hydrogen Central.
The article details an interesting concept called Symone, from the French.
Looking at it, I suspect British Rail’s Motorail service was more efficient, as it had a larger capacity.
Bring back Motorail. Motorway travel may be more flexible than rail but as you say it’s far more efficient when it comes down to capacity. Incidentally British Motorail services ceased many years before those on the Continent and in fact there still are some isolated cases of them still running.

Given that some companies are experimenting with Motorail-for-Trucks and Motorail-for-Trailers, I wouldn’t be surprised to see that like sleeper trains, Motorail will make a comeback.
Many years ago, we took Motorail-sleeper from Boulogne to the South of France. I remember it well, as my late wife, liked to exercise her marital rights in unusual places.
Surely, Motorail on an electrified railway could be fitted with Vehicle-to-Grid chargers, so you arrived at your destination with a fully-charged battery.

Memoirs eh, all that I remember was having to get my car down from the top deck of the wagon because we arrived in Bologna on the 15th August or Assumption Day a public holiday in Italy when all the rail workers seemed to have been absent.
Vehicle-to-Grid chargers to ensure your battery is fully topped up? Good idea but better still if the wagons are equipped with Digital Automatic Couplers which are being promoted for Europe’s freight railway.

Amtrak in the US continues to run the Autotrain, 855 mile long service north south from mid-Atlantic to Florida. Currently with diesel locos (might be convertible to hybrid or H2)
