  1. Rishi Sunak’s cut-back High Speed Two is not a relevant announcement because he is the person
who next year will have to handover the keys of No. 10 to another PM. And the new government will carry on with the project
beyond Birmingham. So no reason to get nervous…

      • After the landslide victory of the Labour Party in Scotland yesterday there can be no doubt anymore that they will win the next general election. And their leader recently said literally: “We will build HS2 in full.”
Maybe national politics is not your favourite hobby, because obviously you have no idea what’s going on
        at present in the UK.

  2. In response to Wolfgang Maresh the Manchester Evening News reported the following
“The Labour Party ‘can’t commit’ to building HS2 to Manchester in full despite wanting to, leader Sir Keir Starmer has said. HS2’s northern leg would not be revived under a Labour government, he signalled, although Tony Blair-era figures have urged him to be less cautious.
Sir Keir said he was unable to promise to reverse Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s announcement to scrap HS2 from the West Midlands to Manchester, citing the Government selling land and cancelling contracts, but said he was in talks with leaders across the North on providing better ‘connectivity’.”

    • If UK is not able to build another proper high speed line for England (like in countries as France, Spain,
Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Japan) then it has become a failed state. It’s as simple as that.

    • There is no doubt that the priority in the North is to build across from Liverpool to Hull.

I challenge any sane person to design a route from Liverpool to Manchester via Manchester Airport, that doesn’t have a connection to the West Coast Main Line.

For a start a decent connection is needed between the West of Scotland and Manchester Airport.

As was suggested by Northern Powerhouse Rail a junction at High Legh, Warrington or thereabouts between the West Coast Main Line and Northern Powerhouse Rail is very much on the table.

A straight line between Piccadilly and Manchester Airport intersects the WCML a few miles North of Crewe.

I wonder if a partly-tunnelled line between the Liverpool-Crewe line to Manchester Piccadilly via the Airport has been proposed. The distance would be just under 30 miles.
