Chiltern Railways 2030 Vision

The title of this post, is the same as that of this page on the Chiltern Railways web site.

It looks a positive vision and must have been written with input and/or approval from Chiltern Railways’s new American owners.

This is an extract from the page.

It covers how investing in our fleet is:

  • The Right Route for people by driving forward improvements in punctuality, level of crowding, frequency and seating capacity.
  • The Right Route for connections by making it easier for people to travel by train to the places they need to go, and bring people and businesses closer together through a stronger network.
  • The Right Route for our environment by reducing carbon emissions and helping customers to use their cars less across our route.
  • The Right Route for innovation by helping create jobs and economic activity across our route and the national supply chain.
  • The Right Route for the future of our communities by helping reach communities reach their full potential as more people move to towns, villages and cities across the route.

We plan to work closely with the Department for Transport to agree the scope and funding for new trains between London and Aylesbury soon.

I talk about the new Aylesbury trains in Chiltern Railways New Trains For Aylesbury.

  1. Do you or anyone know what the name of the American owner is, and when they took over?

      • Out of interest, what has the EU Commission got to do with the taking over of a UK company by a US company? Could potentially the Commission have withheld approval even though we are supposed to have ‘taken back control’?

      • John, Chiltern Railways is an Arriva company, Arriva originally having been set up in the North East of England as T Cowie in 1938 and rebranded in 1997. It was purchased by Deutsche Bahn back in 2010, however ever since 2019 they had been trying to sell. The EC’s involvement relates to the sale by a German company to an American one.

    • Depending on whether it’s rail or bus services Arriva, apart from the Netherlands, have at one time or another run operations in Sweden, eastern Europe, Spain and one or two other countries.

Dutch Province To Introduce Regular Hydrogen Services

  4. It certainly, isn’t a hydrogen supply problem, as it’s in that area, that the Dutch will be producing it from offshore wind.

But it would probably be very easy to run those services using battery-electric trains.

Eemshaven was a fairly cold and bleak place.

    • I’ve just had a look at the background to the Arriva tender for hydrogen powered multiple units. As you say there’s plenty of hydrogen being produced in this area of the Netherlands so the Dutch province of Groningen being a big supporter of hydrogen, and having invested in a wind farm in the North Sea and planning to build a hydrogen production facility there, made it a condition of Arriva’s franchise to running the rail services that they invited tenders for hmus. Politics and financial self interest don’t always make the best bedfellows for operational decisions.

      • I used to employ a young lady, whose mother came from that part of the Netherlands. I’m a bit surprised that a German company was running the trains.

Perhaps plans have changed now there’s going to be a new swing bridge.
